The town of Tryavna is located at the lower reaches of Trevnenska River at the northern outskirts of Tryavna Mountains,
20 km southwards from Gabrovo and 40 km from Veliko Turnovo. The town is located on the elevation of 420 m above sea level.
Tryavna is a town with centuries of history. It was established in late 12th century under the name of Tarnyava. At the end of 12th century there was a final battle between the Byzantines and Bulgarians, in which the Bulgarian Kings Assen and Peter defeated the troops of the Byzantine Emperor Isaac II Angel.
In honour of this glorious victory St. Archangel Michael's Church was built
in the town. This church survived after devastating fires during the Turkish oppression. Presently this church is one of the oldest East
Orthodox churches in Central Bulgaria.
During Bulgarian National Renaissance (mid 19th century) the town became a prospering centre of economy, culture and education. Among the crafts, developed within this period in the town, the icon painting, woodcarving and construction were the most important ones.
In 1839 the second secular school in Bulgaria was opened in Tryavna.
Nowadays Tryavna figures in the List of 100 Bulgarian National Tourist Points of Interest. In the town, famous for its houses in Bulgarian National Renaissance architectural style, there are also many museums and historical monuments.
The town has significantly changed in the recent years. The downtown area of Tryavna was renovated and landscaped. Tourism has been
actively developed, several new hotels have been built in town, there are excellent sports facilities, such as tennis courts,
football field and swimming pool.
Recently in Plachkovtsi, a town near Tryavna , just some 7 km from Balkan Paradise Residential Development, one more swimming pool was opened- a place where you can recreate and enjoy pleasant atmosphere.
The population of Tryavna is about 10 000. The main business is tourism and related businesses and crafts.
